Russian President Vladimir Putin has said North Korea needs 'security guarantees' in exchange for denuclearisation following his first ever meeting with the country's leader Kim Jong-un.

The pair said they have had 'fruitful talks' about how to defuse the standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear program following their one-on-one meeting in the Russian city of Vladivostok on Thursday, in which they sat down for broader negotiations involving top officials from both sides. Putin said he and Kim 'exchanged opinions about what should be done to improve the situation.' Kim noted that they had 'discussed ways of peaceful settlement' and had 'a very fruitful exchange'.
