MacKenzie Bezos pledges to give half her $37bn fortune to charity

MacKenzie Bezos has pledged to give away more than half of her $37billion divorce settlement from her Amazon founder husband.

Last week, she signed The Giving Pledge which is an organization for the world's wealthiest people where they sign up to donate half or more of their fortune.

While Bill and Melissa Gates are both signed up, Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world, is not.

In her pledge last week, MacKenzie said she had 'a disproportionate amount of money to share'.

'We each come by the gifts we have to offer by an infinite series of influences and lucky breaks we can never fully understand.

'In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share.

'My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait.

'And I will keep at it until the safe is empty,' she wrote.

MaCkenzie was awarded 25 percent of her and Jeff's joint stake in Amazon when they settled their divorce.

It was less than the 50 percent she was entitled to and she gave her ex-husband voting control of her shares.

She has not spoken of their divorce other than to say that she was relieved it was settled.
