One hundred firefighters battled a huge fire at a block of flats in east London that left dozens of people needing emergency accommodation.

Fifteen engines accompanied the firefighters that were called to the fire in the 'new build' De Pass Gardens, in Barking, where one-bedroom flats are on sale from £240,000.

Fire crews from Barking, Dagenham, East Ham and surrounding fire stations tackled the flames from 3.31 pm today, eventually bringing the fire under control at around 6 pm.

Barking and Dagenham Council said the flames are now 'under control' and that they have set up temporary accommodation 'for anyone who needs it'.

Photos and videos on social media show enormous flames leaping from the front of the building with smoke rising into the air as stunned people who were evacuated watch on.
